Tom Feeney's Concerns Regarding Proposed NASA Launch Complex

(New Smyrna Beach, FL) - Tom Feeney (R-Oviedo) today released the following statement on NASA's continuing examination of a new launch complex at Site 2:

"I strongly urge NASA to consider eliminating a proposed new launch complex near the Mosquito Lagoon in an area known as Site 2 as a viable option. As a launch site, this area is inferior compared to other locations within the fenced area of NASA's Kennedy Space Center and the Air Force's Cape Canaveral Air Station. As a remnant of Florida's heritage, this habitat is irreplaceable.

"If Florida's Space Coast is to continue as America's premier space launch facility, new launch complexes must be built and operated. Such activity is particularly important in the upcoming post-Shuttle era as the Shuttle workforce transitions to new assignments. I will continue to fight for a vibrant Space Coast economy including the development of new aerospace business.

"But NASA and the Air Force should strive to locate any launch activities within the secured areas of KSC and CCAS. The location of new SpaceX launch facilities at the previously abandoned Launch Complex 40 illustrates how to achieve this objective. I hope to see future examples of this successful cooperation with and accommodation of new space launch operators," said Feeney.
