Tom Feeney For Congress

GOP Effort to Block Benefits from Illegal Immigrants is ERASED

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
August 3, 2007

(Washington, D.C.) - U.S. Rep. Tom Feeney (R-Oviedo) today responded to last night's obliteration of the Republican Motion to Recommit that would prevent illegal immigrants from receiving benefits that hardworking taxpayers are forced to pay for.
"This is the House of Representatives, not a dry erase board that Democrats can wipe clean. Republicans succeeded yesterday in stopping illegal aliens from receiving benefits, but Democrats deliberately violated rules and procedures. Last night's vote to block illegal immigrants from receiving benefits at the expense of hardworking taxpayers is something that my constituents agree with wholeheartedly. I will not stand by while Democrats ignore their voice on this critical issue.

"Democrats stole a victory from hardworking taxpayers and instead rewarded illegal immigrants. In doing so, they erased my vote and ignored the pleas from my constituents to put hardworking taxpayers first,
" said Feeney.
Watch the chaos for yourself here:

  • ABC: Disorder in the House: http://blogs.abcnews.com/politicalradar/2007/08/disorder-in-the.html "As the vote came to a close last night, Republicans say the scoreboard read 215-213, meaning the measure passed. But when Rep. Michael McNulty, D-N.Y., gaveled it down he said the measure failed 214-214, and had lost. There was all sorts of chaos, and House Democrats being pressured to change their votes, all of it visible on C-SPAN (and now HERE)."

The Republican MTR would recommit H.R. 3161 to the Committee on Appropriations with instructions to report the same back to the House promptly with an amendment to:
  • prohibit any funds in the bill from being used to employ an alien who is not authorized to be employed in the U.S. alien who is not authorized to be employed in the U.S.

  • prohibit any funds in the bill from being used for rental housing assistance programs to provide assistance for an alien not authorized to receive such assistance per 213A of the Immigration and Nationality Act.
